What New Emoji from 14.0 Are We Excited About?

At Emoji Foundation we are excited about the bubble emoji, because it is long overdue and iridescent. And speaking of things that are shiny, there is also a mirror ball.

We foresee the low battery and eyes brimming with tears being crowd pleasers and personal daily use Emoji. As they both are useful for expressing everyday feelings. Who hasn’t felt like they had low batteries and and needed a recharge? Similarly, I picture the eyes brimming with tears as a popular Tiktok video response in the days to come.

The New 14.0 Emoji Set

Who knew it was so easy to be completely honest with yourself? It’s almost impossible not to spill the beans on what you really think if you take these personality tests online – and that’s the point. Sometimes learning about yourself is the most challenging task of all. Telling others is easy. But knowing yourself well enough to be honest with yourself is much thicker. Unicode, the cross-industry consortium that decides on text-based standards for the internet, announced 64 new emoji for the year back in January, with more options for animals, plants, and more. Those emoji include polar bears, bubble tea, and our favorite: the Trans Flag!

The new emoji are included in iOS 14.2, which was just released. These new characters will probably be available for iPhone owners sometime in October.

Released in early 2020, Bloodshot is the story of a U.S. Marine, Ray Garrison, and his transition into a super-soldier. While on vacation with his wife, Gina, the two are kidnapped and murdered. Ray Garrison is brought back to life through a series of surgeries that infuse his body with nanotechnologies. He returns with no memory, but intense strength and speed.

Bloodshot is the first film to come to life from the Valiant Comics universe. Valiant is an American publisher of comic books that was formed in 1989. The company was founded by the former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, Jim Shooter, and investor Steven Massarsky.

Valiant Comics has changed hands a few times over the years. In 1994, the company was bought by Acclaim Entertainment; when they went under in 2004, two entrepreneurs restarted Valiant in 2005. The pair brought the company back to life over the next few years, and in 2018, Valiant was bought outright by DMG Entertainment.

DMG: A New Era

DMG is a global media company, working in film, VR, gaming, live entertainment, and television. Led by Dan Mintz of DMG, this company acquired the rights to the entire Valiant story-vault. Mintz has expressed his excitement for future Valiant/DMG projects.

Bloodshot is the first of these stories to see the cinematic light of day. Starring Vin Diesel, the movie has been well received for its performances and action. The characters’ nuances haven’t escaped critics’ attention, either, and Mintz thinks he knows why.

A large chunk of the comics in Valiant’s arsenal was written in the 1990s. Because the stories were born in the 90s, they have a broader scope of vision than that of DC and Marvel comics. DC and Marvel storylines were mostly created in the 30s and 70s, respectively. Mintz has stated that “the characters are more diversified just because of that. Their problems are closer to our problems.”

Can Valiant Compete with DC and Marvel?

Dan Mintz believes that Valiant’s characters’ relevance and realism will prove that the company is a real contender in the comic race. With the huge, almost almighty personas in the Marvel universe, it was inevitable before the films came to consist of “superheroes hurling planets at each other.” Mintz believes that there is a need for more intimate character pieces, like Joker (2019).

Bloodshot is also different from the adult-specific films of Deadpool (2016) and Birds of Prey (2020), as it brings us back around to the more family-friendly PG-13 rating. Vin Diesel, an essential name in action, is a professional at delivering the “oohs” and “aahs” of combat, without all of the blood.

Up Next for Valiant

It may have been the first released, but Bloodshot is by no means the last movie we’ll see from the Valiant universe. In 2015, Sony and Valiant signed a five-film contract to produce films based on the Bloodshot and Harbinger storylines. The next three to five years will see most of these films released, and, if they go well, you can rest assured that DMG will be delivering Valiant content for years to come.

The Covid-19 pandemic is even affecting the release of new Emoji!

The Unicode Consortium, the group behind emoji releases, announced today that it’s delaying its version planned for 2021, meaning that devices won’t receive new emoji next year and instead will get a release in 2022. The good news is that the emoji that were announced earlier this year, like the olive, beaver, and plunger, will still be available this fall. Unicode says the delay is happening because it relies on volunteers who are currently overwhelmed dealing with the pandemic.

“Under the current circumstances we’ve heard that our contributors have a lot on their plates at the moment and decided it was in the best interests of our volunteers and the organizations that depend on the standard to push out our release date,” said Mark Davis, president of the consortium, in the group’s blog post.

This means the deadline for submitting new emoji is also pushed back. People can submit their ideas from June 15th until September 1st. Again, though, these won’t show up on devices until 2022.

The Unicode Consortium, a nonprofit that maintains text standards to support all the world’s written languages across every device, today debuted a new look for unicode.org.

The Consortium invites emoji and language enthusiasts to celebrate World Emoji Day on July 17 and “Adopt a Character” to support its ongoing efforts. More than 136,000 characters are up for adoption — including this new Emoji 12.0 additions such as the sloth, the sea otter, the waffle and Saturn.

Those who choose to adopt will receive a custom digital badge they can display to publicly show their support, whether on their website or social media. Learn more and adopt your character here.

Apple offers a look at new emoji coming to iPhone this fall

To celebrate World Emoji Day, Apple is previewing a selection of new emoji coming this fall, revealing the newest designs that bring even more diversity to the keyboard, alongside fun and exciting additions to popular categories of food, animals, activities and smiley faces. We’re most excited about the new mixed gender and skin tone couple Emoji, which is something we have called for at Emoji Foundation for a while now.  You can see the new designs in Apple’s press release.

Lawyers working on the behalf of Germanic vowel alternation have filed a class action against ‘cheap and disrespectful’ ideograms. Too often complicated exchanges are being reduced down to a basic sequence of winking face, heavy black heart and Theresa May burning Windrush documentation.
A spokesman for Umlauts explained: ‘My client has been squiggling over the International Phonetic Alphabet for over a thousand years. Quite frankly it’s insulting to see some gurning chancer telling us how to feel – when James Corden will do that for free’.

Unicode considers new color variations for Emoji

This could be used for emoji representations of a black cat or a glass of white wine, for example. For more info, see the Working Draft for Proposed Update UTS #51: Unicode Emoji, section 2.9 “Color”.

The new emoji in the set are listed in Emoji Recently Added v12.0, with sample images. The new Emoji typically start showing up on mobile phones in September/October — some platforms may release them earlier.

We are so excited to finally have interracial couple Emoji, which is something we have called for at Emoji Foundation for a while now. Other notable characters are the drop of blood, sea otter (a personal favorite) and disability emoji. Whose life could be complete without a yawning emoji? And finally, the oyster emoji, which is apparently the end of sexism.

Unicode has selected March 5 as the release date for Unicode 12.0. This is when the final emoji list for 2019 will be published (Emoji 12.0 is currently still being decided upon), alongside of course, other Unicode characters being added this year.

May of this year will usher in Emoji 2019: 2nd​ International Workshop on Emoji Understanding and Applications in Social Media. Co-located with The Web Conference 2019 (formerly WWW)

Overall 2019 is going to give us some of the new emoji we have been waiting for. We will continue to learn and expand our understanding of these little symbols.

Emoji 2019 aims to stimulate research on understanding social, cultural, communicative, and linguistic roles of emoji and developing novel approaches to analyze, interpret and understand emoji and their usage in social media applications. It provides a forum to bring together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry in the areas of social network analysis and mining, natural language processing, computational linguistics, human-computer interaction, and computational social sciences to discuss high-quality research and emerging applications, to exchange ideas and experience, and to identify new opportunities for collaboration.
